Understanding hypnotherapy for anxiety

How hypnotherapy helps manage anxiety, what happens in a session, how many sessions to expect, and who it may not suit.

Anxiety is a common challenge. The constant demands of work, personal life and social pressure can lead to overwhelming stress and worry. Traditional therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and medication are effective, and there is growing interest in another approach: hypnotherapy. This article looks at how hypnotherapy can help manage anxiety and support mental wellbeing.

What hypnotherapy is

Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic technique that uses hypnosis to create a state of focused attention and heightened suggestibility. In this relaxed state you are more open to suggestion, which lets you explore your subconscious mind and address deep-seated issues. Contrary to popular belief, hypnotherapy is not about losing control or being manipulated. It is a collaborative process in which the therapist guides you towards positive change.

How hypnotherapy helps with anxiety

Anxiety often comes from patterns of negative thinking, unresolved trauma or deeply ingrained fears. Hypnotherapy works on the subconscious mind, where those patterns are stored, and reframes them.

Relaxation and stress reduction. Hypnotherapy induces deep relaxation, which calms the nervous system and lowers heart rate and blood pressure.

Breaking negative thought patterns. In hypnosis you can reach the subconscious mind, where negative thoughts and beliefs are often entrenched, and a hypnotherapist can help reframe them into more positive and constructive beliefs.

Addressing root causes. Hypnotherapy can uncover the roots of anxiety, such as past trauma or unresolved emotional issues, and bring them to light in a safe and supportive setting so you can begin to process them.

Building confidence and resilience. Positive suggestion and imagery build confidence and coping strategies, so stressful situations become easier to handle without giving way to anxiety.

Strengthening the mind-body connection. Techniques such as visualisation and guided imagery give a greater sense of control over your emotions and your physical responses to stress.

What to expect in a session

A session begins with a discussion of your goals and concerns. The hypnotherapist then guides you into a state of relaxation, often using deep breathing or progressive muscle relaxation. Once you are in a hypnotic state, the therapist uses a combination of suggestion, imagery and therapeutic techniques to address the underlying causes of your anxiety.

Sessions usually last between 45 minutes and an hour. The number of sessions varies with the person: some notice improvement after a few sessions, while others benefit from ongoing work.

Is hypnotherapy right for you?

Hypnotherapy is highly effective for many people, but it may not suit everyone. Approach it with an open mind and realistic expectations. People with certain conditions, such as severe depression or psychosis, should consult a health care provider before pursuing hypnotherapy.

If you are considering hypnotherapy for anxiety, work with a qualified and experienced practitioner. If traditional therapies have not given you the relief you are looking for, hypnotherapy may be worth exploring as part of a complete plan for managing anxiety.
