Hypnotherapy

Clinical hypnotherapy in Box Hill for anxiety, pain, anger, unwanted habits and addictions: what hypnosis is, what it is not, and how it helps.

What hypnotherapy is

Hypnotherapy is the practical application of hypnosis towards specific therapeutic goals. It is scientifically validated and accepted by the Australian Medical Association and the Australian Psychological Society. Hypnosis is a process for reaching aspects of the mind we are not usually conscious of, to help make the positive changes you wish to make.

Hypnosis has been defined in many ways. Simply stated, it is an altered state of consciousness characterised by focused imagination and a heightened receptivity to learning, change and transformation.

For a number of sub-clinical issues, including anxiety, pain management, anger management, quitting negative habits and addictions, hypnotherapy is the most effective and fastest therapeutic approach. People find that it helps them make remarkable changes in a short time, and they find the experience of hypnosis pleasant and effective.

In the state of hypnosis a person reaches a heightened level of awareness with increased mental flexibility and receptiveness. In this state unhelpful old perceptions, limiting beliefs and negative self-perceptions are easily released, and one is more open to new perspectives and ideas that support self-acceptance, worth and value.

The success of a hypnotherapy intervention depends on the relationship between therapist and client, just as in conventional therapy or counselling. It is an interpersonal learning and healing process.

Change and transformation

Change is a slower process that leads you, for example, to give up smoking. Transformation is a faster process that can turn you from a smoker into a non-smoker quickly.

What hypnotherapy is not

Hypnotherapy is not mind control. Unlike the popular image of the dominant stage hypnotist, you are fully in control while under hypnosis and do not have to take on the therapist's suggestions if you do not want to. You are always aware of what is happening, and if necessary you can bring yourself out of the hypnotic state.

Hypnotherapy is not something that is done to you. It is a process of healing, change and transformation that you and the therapist do together. Hypnosis does not work if you do not want to be hypnotised.

Fees and Medicare

Hypnotherapy consultations have their own fee structure, with an 80-minute initial consultation that includes a full explanation of the process and a written program targeting your needs. Some aspects of hypnotherapy, such as relaxation training, guided imagery training and psycho-education, can be offset by Medicare's Mental Health Care Plan. See the fees page for details.
